We love exploring the outdoors with our dog in the spring and summertime, but he and millions of other dogs have environmental allergies just like us. They get skin rashes, hives and hay fever, and this is particularly common in our pup Francis which got me wondering whether you can give dogs Piriton.

How Much Piriton Can I Give My Dog?

A small dog weighing under 9kg (20lbs) can take 1/2 a Piriton tablet which is a dose of 2mg. Larger dogs weighing more than 9kg can take between 1 to 2 tablets which is a maximum dose of 8mg. 

What Is Piriton?

If you are giving dogs Piriton, you need to understand what you are allowing them to ingest and what risk are associated with them. Piriton is chlorphenamine, a type of antihistamine used for allergic conditions in both humans and pets. It comes under various brand names that are available in tablet and liquid form.

• It is a brand name of a range of hay fever relief medications
• It is a range of drugs that uses the active ingredient chlorpheniramine

You will find Piriton in most peoples medicine cupboards as both humans and dogs can take it. Be careful of different allergy tablets that could contain other ingredients that may be dangerous to your dog. For example, antihistamines in foreign countries can include:

• Amphetamine 
• Caffeine 
• Pseudoephedrine 
• Alcohol

How Does Piriton Work?

First, we need to understand what specific symptoms can occur as a result of allergies and environmental components:

• Sneezing
• Runny or blocked nose
• Coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing
• Watery, red or itchy eyes

 Piriton uses the active ingredient to block histamine from telling your body that it needs to respond to an environmental trigger.

Is Piriteze the Same as Piriton? 

Piriteze is different to Piriton because they have other active ingredients. Piriton has chlorpheniramine as its main active ingredient, and it's generally safe for dogs. However, the active ingredient in Piriteze is cetirizine hydrochloride. Cetirizine hydrochloride is not safe for pets, so it's better to air on the side of caution and give them Piriton, which vets generally recommend. If you are in doubt, you should always pick up the phone and speak to a Vet first. 

Why Would a Dog Take Piriton?

If your dog has been affected by insect bites or has had food allergies, hives, or hay fever, the Piriton has an active ingredient that can alleviate many of these conditions. A dog will take Piriton for very similar reasons to why you or I would take them. It relieves the irritations that environmental factors or bites, and other conditions could cause. 

Can I Give Piriton to My Dog Everyday?

Sometimes dogs will need to take a Piriton before venturing outdoors on adventures in the spring and summer. The allergic reaction is caused by the dog's response to pollen in the air just like us. Despite this, it is not something that you should consistently give to your dog unless recommended by your vet with a long term plan of action. 

Is Piriton Safe for Dogs?

Piriton is safe for dogs however, the active ingredient in Piriton can become dangerous if it interacts with other drugs that your dog has taken. You should only give your dog Piriton on the advice of a vet. According to Drugs.com there are 320 drugs which can interact with chlorpheniramine (the active ingredient in Piriton).  If your dog is taking other drugs and you are considering giving them a Piriton tablet, then your first point of call should be to speak to your vet. 

Does Piriton Cause Side Effects in Dogs?

Piriton can potentially cause some side effects in dogs. The Piriton for dogs side effects can include:

• Drowsiness
• Diarrhoea
• Dry mouth 
• Vomiting 
• Change in behaviour 

Drowsiness can occur just like it can in humans. This is generally OK, but if you give them too much Piriton, it certainly will be a cause for concern, and a vet must be contacted. 

Diarrhoea can occur due to an upset stomach from the medicine. If it is persistent, then seek advice from a vet.  

A dry mouth could be noticeable, so make sure they have plenty of water and make sure the water is easy to access. If your dog is tired or slightly drowsy and is sitting upstairs, it's no good leaving the water downstairs in the kitchen for them. 

Vomiting can occur, but you should check they are not just spitting the tablet out. If they spit it out, try to incorporate it into a meal; however, if they keep vomiting, you should seek advice from a vet. 

A behaviour change can occur but is uncommon. However, if you notice anything significant, then seek some medical attention. 

Piriton Dosage Per KG of Weight 

Dogs can safely take 0.2mg of Piriton per kg of body weight. The table below will help you to view your dogs weight and determine how many milligrams of Piriton your dog can take but you should always follow a vets advice above anything we provide in this table.

To conclude, dogs can take Piriton. If they are small dogs, they can have 1/2 a tablet, and larger dogs can take up to 2 tablets. Always consult your vet first and avoid mixing Piriton with other drugs your dogs may be on. Once you have all of this under control, you can venture out, sniff the flowers and smell the air without a worry which is how life, travel and being with your companion should be!
