Why Should You Use a Waterproof Dog Collar?
Table of Contents
We all know that dogs love to go in the water. Unfortunately, this often leaves them with smelly and dirty dog collars. Does this sound familiar?
"Does anyone have any tips on how to get that pungent smell out of a dog collar. I bathe my dog regularly but his dog collar has got this awful smell. I've tried vinegar then tried baking soda but to no avail!"
There have been reports of people throwing the dog collars into a dishwasher. It may work but I know some of the stuff our dogs roll around in and I think I would pass on letting any of that go near any kitchen utensils and plates.
A waterproof dog collar will not retain bad smells or start breaking down as easily meaning they can be easily wiped clean and then re-used. Practicality, cleanliness, and hygiene are just a few reasons why waterproof dog collars should be on your list of accessories when shopping for your pooch!
Whether you have a Labrador or a tiny dog, it is hilarious when they bomb into the water but it's not so funny when they come out stinking and decide to shake all over you and have ruined all the nice shiny dog travel accessories you recently decked them out in! Dog accessories are made for adventure like waterproof dog supplies and waterproof dog collars are the perfect solution for this problem.
Waterproof dog collars are the perfect way to ensure that your pup's favourite accessory will remain clean, hygienic and in good condition for longer! It can be wiped down or thrown into a washing machine when it gets dirty.
Why Should You use a Waterproof Dog Collar?
You don't have to use one but smelly dog collars can be impossible to clean because the smell clings on to all the nooks and crannies. A waterproof dog collar doesn't have this problem because you can wipe them clean with a damp cloth or simply put it through your washing machine!
Here are some more reasons why waterproof dog collars should be an essential part of any dogs wardrobe:
- Waterproof dog collars are practical and hygienic.
- They come in a range of fun, vibrant colours to match any waterproof dog harness or waterproof dog coat!
- Durable BioThane makes them sturdy but comfortable for your pet.
- You can clean the waterproof dog collar without worrying about scrubbing out that dirty smell you hate with a soap and sponge.
Are Waterproof Dog Collars Good for Dogs?
Waterproof dog collars are certainly not bad for dogs. Biothane waterproof collars are non toxic which is a good start... This means that they can be used in humid conditions, near water and it won't hold on to bacteria which of course can be bad for dogs if it is near to their eyes, nose or mouth.
Bacteria are naturally present everywhere including waterproof dog collars but when you put them around your pet's head especially in the nose, mouth and eyes, there is a chance that you will be putting bacteria in or near their openings. That can lead to infections which are very dangerous for pets.
Some of the diseases your pet could get when they have bacterial infections include blindness, pneumonia and sepsis (infection spreading through body). Dogs don't need waterproof collars to stay away from such diseases but waterproof collars decrease the risk and chances of it happening.
Some common types of bacteria that can be found on non-waterproof dog collars include:
- Staphylococcus aureus (the most common type) - this is responsible for causing abscesses, boils and other infections in dogs;
- Streptococcus - this is also responsible for causing infections in dogs;
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa (the most common type) - this one causes pneumonia and sepsis.
When you choose waterproof collars, you can be at least a little more assured that your dog can stay healthy without getting infected. Of course, with the best will in the world this is not always feasible but we can only improve their chances with small changes.
What is a Good Waterproof Dog Collar?
There are two great waterproof dog collars. The EzyDog Neo collar (Neoprene) and the BioThane dog collar are both waterproof options.
Neoprene is waterproof and is a great waterproof dog collar. It has rubberized coating on the inside for waterproofing, flexible webbing with steel D-rings to provide strength, and it doesn't absorb water like nylon does (so your pet stays drier in wet conditions). Neoprene, also known as polychloroprene, is used in all kinds of products, from wetsuits to pool toys.
The second style of waterproof dog collar are the BioThane collars. This BioThane material has a similar feel and strength as leather but doesn't absorb water or get damaged when wet. It's also very durable so you won't have to worry about it breaking easily but this depends on the thickness and strength of your dog.
Is BioThane Waterproof?
BioThane is waterproof thanks to the manufacturing process. It is made from a high density polyethylene material. It's a polyester webbing coated in PVC/TPU which makes it durable, waterproof and easy to clean. The manufacturing process allows for this bio-based plastic to be extremely tough and durable, whilst also being very lightweight.
These BioThane waterproof dog collars are popular with owners who take their dogs on long hikes or into the water often because they do not have to worry about the collar absorbing any moisture but also love to have something colourful and stylish just to finish off a great all round collar.
Are Light up Collars Waterproof?
You can buy Masbrill Light Up Dog Collars which are supposed to be waterproof. However there have been reported issues with the lights going out and just not working. They have a USB port in them and whenever you have a USB port you have a change of water damage especially when submerged. They would not be high on my recommended list.
For a collar I would choose one dedicated to the job of remaining waterproof and then would choose something like the Ruffwear Beacon light which has been proven time and time again that it can be submerged in water without issue.
Are Reflective Dog Collars Waterproof?
Reflective dog collars can be waterproof but this is dependent on whether they have a coating to protect them from water or not. If there isn't, then it will absorb some of the water which may lead to rusting over time
Can Leather Dog Collars Get Wet?
You might be wondering if leather dog collars can get wet or not. The answer is yes, they absolutely can! If your pup loves the water like mine does then you'll need to make sure that their collar isn't made out of this material because it will become damaged once it gets soaked. This means that when they are swimming around in a lake or during a rainstorm their collar will deteriorate over time. Instead of using leather, you should look into getting one that is made out of Neoprene or BioThane which can resist water and won't be affected by it at all!
Ever had a wet and smelly dog collar? The water-resistant material on these collars is designed to keep the collar dry. That's not all, this will also protect your pup from dangerous bacteria that can grow in dampness. There are lots of colours and patterns to choose from so you'll be able to find one that matches their personality or style as well as practicality! You should also think about how long it would take for you to need another new collar because most people with a dog could do with having at least one waterproof collar. BioThane or EzyDog Neoprene would both make great choices if you're looking for durability and function paired together - they won't let anything ruin your amazing, wet dog adventures!
