How to dry your dog or cat after the rain

How to dry your dog or cat after the rain

You have been travelling like true adventurers with your pets. The weather took a turn for the worse and you all got absolutely drenched.

How to dry your dog or cat after adventuring in the rain

We have all been there, done that, got the t-shirt and it's a barrel of laughs...sometimes. Now you just want to get back, get dry and relax but first you need to fix your furry furiend who suddenly looks a little unhappy.

Alternatively, they maybe happy as a 'pig in poo' and the zoomies begin! just to show you how happy they are after that exhilarating trip out with you.

Many cats are also out venturing with their humans these days and they are not huge fans of getting wet and muddy, so it is nice of you to consider keeping them dry when out and about with them.

Can cats and dogs shake themselves dry?

A dog cat shake themselves dry. Four seconds of shaking can remove up to 70% of the water from their fur.

A cat cannot shake themselves dry when the fur becomes waterlogged. Cats generally keep themselves very clean and they prefer to stay dry. The surface layer of the fur to the skin and organs is generally quite thin hence they will always choose to find shelter in the rain or look for a heat spot to warm up quickly.

Potential pitfalls

Dogs - If you don't dry them, they might rub the wet dog smell against your furniture.

If you don't dry them they could develop nasty skin conditions.

Dogs love to play chase when wet....Good luck!

So, how to dry your dog or cat after the rain and adventures?

There are different occasions where drying is required. If you are out on an adventure then follow these instructions obviously without a bath or a plugged in hair dryer! You will simply use the towel/robe and mitts before hopping back into a vehicle.

Escape the elements

Find a place dry and warm, preferably back at home. Did you know: Any moisture trapped against the skin for too long will potentially cause itching, skin infections or hot spots? Damp fur can also quickly get matted too which creates more work for you.

Squeeze and pat down with a towel

Now you are somewhere dry, grab your towel, preferably not your human ones and ensure you don't rub them aggressively with it. Try to gently squeeze the fur and gently pull out as much water as possible.

If you have a dog, determine the kind of coat your dog has.

  • Wool & Curl
  • Short & Smooth
  • Silky
  • Double
  • puppy
  • Wire

Silky

Hand held dryer required to keep it tangle free and looking like model.

Double coated

A good pat and dry is best for this.

Puppy

Do not use a dryer - Pet towel with Velcro fasten and wrap them.

Wool & Curl

This will take some work, start with patting down and squeezing and if possible use a good handheld dryer.

Wire

Use some soft drying mitts, they will love you for it.

Short & Smooth

Go for a soft towel dry and wrap around robe.

Blow dry where possible

As explained earlier, if your pet is a dog and they are long haired then it's a good idea to blow dry them. Take care around sensitive areas such as the ears and introduce them to this gently.

Wrap them in a robe and pamper

Once finished wrap them up in a robe and allow them to relax. if you really want to treat them and take pampering to the next level, you can groom and further clean them whilst they sit on your lap unless they are an English Mastiff or super size Siberian cat! We have a grooming video coming up soon.
